Interview with St Albans Tourism & Regeneration
On the show today we heard from Charles Baker, the St Albans Tourism & Regeneration Manager.Charles was promoting the St Albans Heritage Open Days will will run from Thursday 10th – Sunday 13th September.
Heritage Open Days is a national scheme which celebrates England's architecture and culture by allowing access FREE of charge for a few days of the year, to interesting properties that are not normally open to the public, or would charge an entrance fee.
Attractions include:-
• The Clock Tower in Market Place.
• The Cathedral’s 11th century Norman bell-tower.
• Kingsbury Barn.
• The St Albans Signal box.
There are also many guided walks including for the first time a walk focusing on the life of Samuel Ryder, a walk around Redbourn, a walk with the Civic Society linked to the Council’s City Vision, a heritage tree walk, tours in the old cells of the Town Hall, as well as a host of guided historical walks from the City of St Albans Tour Guides.

Interview with Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and Theme Tune Challenge!
Hi everyone,
On the show today, we heard from Tim Hill from Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. Tim reminded us that the getting out and about in the countryside during Autumn can be most enjoyable and rewarding. It's a free activity, good exercise and during this time of year you might even see a bird of prey! This is the time of year when birds start migrating and it's possible to see hawks, buzzards, red kites, and even kestrels. Warm sunny autumn days are the best time to look, particularly around west St Albans in the Potters Crouch / Bedmond areas.
Also at this time of year, you should still be able to spot dragon flies and butterflies. Tim also reminded us that hedgerows are particularly important during this time of year as they house bats as well as produce fruits and berries. A great place to spot bats is by the lake in Verulam Park.
If you'd like to see some countryside during the autumn months then Herts and Middlesex Wildilfe Trust manges 43 nature reserves which are well worth a visit. They also run guided walks, training courses and workshops. For more information visit www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/herts/. They're also looking for volunteers - if you'd like to work with the organisation as a volunteer, then call 01727 858901.
Also on the show we had Phil Richards play our Theme Tune Challenge - Phil is a Radio Verulam presenter and presents Verulam AM which runs Monday to Friday, 8am - 12pm. Here's a new leaderboard showing Phil's score along with the scores from other Radio Verulam people:

Hertfordshire Open Studios
Hi everyone,
On the show today we heard from Lucky Dolan of the Herts Visual Arts Forum. Lucky was telling us about the Hertforshire Open Studios programme that will be running from the 12th September to the 4th October. Open Studios is a programme where by visual artists open up their personal studio spaces for the public to see and create special artist run exhibitions throughout the county. In total, 180 artists are participating. You can ask questions, ask about techniques and see work that might not be shown in a formal exhibition.
There seems to be a plethera of artistic talent in Hertforshire but a serious lacking of places for art to be seen - this makes the Open Studios programme really important both for the artist and the community.

St Albans Tourist Information Centre, in libraries, art shops and at the Secret Garden Cafe in George Street, St Albans. You can also get the catologue and more information from www.hvaf.org.uk.
